9 Ways to break the Dull-Spirited Monster - Monotony

Ever heard the phrase below?

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,

All play and no work makes Jack a mere toy.

The fast-paced urbanization toppled by the COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to adopt a ‘Work, Play, and Study’ from home lifestyle. We might as well be a replica of ‘Jack’ for the rest of our life till the arrival of doomsday. Sounds horrifying, doesn’t it?

From working professionals stuck at home with their tedium setups, glaring at them every day to the travel enthusiasts confined to places they once dreaded and the students who are missing out on the ecstatic years of their life, this article might help you confront and conquer monotony in a snip!

Hobbies

“A hobby a day keeps the doldrums away”.

-Phyllis McGinley

Discovering new hobbies is like stumbling upon a treasure of joy. Precisely, a hobby is an activity you enjoy investing your time in without seeking an ROI.

Having or inculcating hobbies provides a way to break out of a monotonous shell and offers a fresh perspective on life.

Here is a list of hobbies you might want to dabble in-

• Painting

• Writing

• Learning an instrument

• Reading

• Consuming knowledge out of your designated professional space

Making videos

• Playing a sport and a lot more!

Hobbies give your personality an extra edge and can be a great conversation starter!

Traveling

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page”.

-Saint Augustine

People often find themselves in a rut once their professional life stabilizes, leading to the adoption of an ‘Eat.Work.Sleep.Repeat’ lifestyle. The highly recommended way to break free and cleanse

your mind of work stuff is traveling.

Traveling not only breaks the absurdity of routine but also lets you explore and appreciate nature; one would otherwise miss out on it.

Travelling does not always have to be about visiting exotic countries for a long haul, in place of which you can travel and explore bars, cafes, gaming rooms, adventure islands, malls, and considerably more within your vicinity. You can even plan weekend trips with your loved ones to nearby cities and towns.

Do not be stuck on one page; try and turn the pages and, there might be a pleasant surprise waiting only for you!

Reading Fiction and Fantasy Novels

“Books and doors are the same things. You open them, and you go through into another world.”

 – Jeanette Winterson

Fictional or fantasy novels open a whole new mode of travel, i.e., traveling via your imagination. So, pick up a book from genres you always felt a little connection with and travel a mythical world created in your very own mind without moving an inch!

Meet up with estranged friends!

In the pace of growing up and building our life, we often leave behind people we were once the closest to; we scroll through their feed on social media, like their posts and pictures but leave it to that.

Take a leap of faith and drop a message or call them and start a conversation that was abruptly ended by adulthood. You might be surprised by how much you and they still have in common and, it could lead to an everlasting bond!

Mix it up!

Routine has always equated to a humdrum lifestyle. But it does not have to be when you realize the hold you could exercise over your schedule.

Mix up your routine by doing things a bit differently every morning you wake up.

For instance,

  • Try meditating instead of checking your emails
  • Put on your favorite songs and dance around while you are dressing up for work
  • Take a different route to work

Treat Yourself

Find the recipe for your favorite dish, put on your chef hat and music that sways you and, enjoy your home-cooked restaurant-style dish!

Try cooking for yourself once or twice a week and, if it lifts your spirit then, hey, you found a new hobby!

Jazz up your Dating life!

If your current dating status is Single, then going on dates might smash the dull cloud looming over you!

Fill up your profile on dating apps or ask out people you are interested in or even ask your friends to set you up on a blind date. Meeting new people not only bursts the rut but also allows you to explore your personality and, who knows, you might end up with a lasting friendship or relationship!

Converse with your Parents

Sometimes a cup of coffee and a heart-warming conversation is all it takes to lift your spirits.

Your parents have lived long enough to have a treasure trove of varying experiences and, divulging them would make them nostalgic and fill you up with a new purpose.

Listening about their struggles, love stories, friendships, heartbreaks, and blithesome moments would shape up your outlook on life and its uncertainty. Thus, breaking your monotony!

Love what you do and do what you love!

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do."

- Steve Jobs

The above quote is a life lesson and shows you the trick to erase the word monotonous till eternity.

People find themselves stuck in a routine world when their work starts feeling mechanistic as well as their creativity feels repressed. On the other hand, people who engage in jobs that stimulate their creative juices find themselves in a routine they find pleasure in.

In totality, enjoying your day-to-day activities would make the above tips void ab initio!

Living in a black and white world could cause your modus operandi to become routine. We hope that in this article you found your grey area!
